Evil Demon King Promotion Rules
The Reincarnated Demon King's Host Just Wants to Live in Peace, But the Hero Won't Leave Him AloneDemon King Ascension is the hidden rule governing the emergence of the greatest form of demon power. The hierarchy distinguishes ordinary Demonkin, Novices, Demon Lords, and the Demon King, but only Demon Lords know how the final transformation occurs. Because the condition is not merely technical strength but worthiness, ascension remains unpredictable even within demon society, and the appearance of a new Demon King changes the balance of the entire world.
Place in the Demon Hierarchy
Demonkin occupy the lowest level, possessing little or no mana or magic and serving primarily as common soldiers. A Demonkin can become a Novice when a Demon Lord, acting as a sponsor, gifts them mana. Novices combine varying magical potential with great physical prowess and are trained as combatants. Demon Lords stand above them: they ascend after massive slaughter of innocents, gaining immense mana and growing wings. This makes Demon Lord ascension a recognizable, if horrific, consequence of violence.
The Demon King represents a separate and higher threshold. Only Demon Lords know the method of reaching it, and the transformation does not work for every candidate. The demon must also be worthy of the power, a qualification that separates Demon King Ascension from the more mechanically described rise to Demon Lord. The account stresses that no Demon King had existed for many years, making the title an exceptional historical condition rather than a routine rank.
Malthios’s Ascension
Malthios’s transformation demonstrates the rule through an act of extreme violence against his own kind. After killing Naamah, he stared at her ashes and felt his mana spike in the same way it had when he first ascended to Demon Lord. Blood on his skin and clothing seemed to sink into him as his wings opened to their full length. Their glossy black feathers changed to dark blood red, a visible sign that the long-anticipated change had begun.
The witnesses understood what they were seeing because Malthios had already been killing other demons, and the possibility of his rise had been anticipated. His ascension therefore combines an established pattern of slaughter with the exceptional judgment of worthiness. The scene ends with the direct confirmation that a new Demon King had risen, converting Malthios from a powerful demon lord into the central demonic threat remembered by the wider world.
Secrecy and Political Consequences
The rule’s secrecy gives Demon Lords exclusive control over knowledge of the final transformation. The wider population knows that the form exists, but not the process by which it can be achieved or the standard by which a candidate is judged worthy. That concealment makes the Demon King less a publicly regulated office than an opaque culmination of demonic power.
The consequences extend beyond demon society. After Malthios’s defeat, remnants of his army remained active across Algeya under the command of other Demon Lords, while the Hero’s party continued defending the common people. The existence of a Demon King thus organizes the political unity of the mortal kingdoms around a common enemy. Their cooperation across racial borders is presented as having become possible largely because the demonic threat forced them to unite.
The Rule and Theo’s Peril
Demon King Ascension also governs the danger surrounding Theo. Malthios’s reincarnation within Theo creates a shared-body condition in which the former Demon King remains present while Theo outwardly lives as a village healer. Theo knows that friendship alone cannot save him if his identity is discovered, because the revelation would expose him to the same fear and punishment directed at Malthios. Cargo eventually asks whether Theo will tell the others that he is demon spawn, forcing the concealed identity into direct conversation.
When Bryony and the Hero’s party summon Theo to the capital to help the injured Luc, Theo understands that entering the city will end his autonomy. Those in power will know who he is and where he lives, and they may force him back into the Hero’s party, where the truth about Malthios could be uncovered. His choice is not made because the danger has diminished; he goes because Luc may die, and Luc matters to him more than the institutions that treat heroes as expendable replacements.
Public Judgment and Resistance
The capital’s trial turns the hidden rule into a public accusation. Theo is identified as the host of the reincarnated Demon King, and the court places him before a throne while a mirror broadcasts the proceedings throughout Algeya. The trial treats the presence of Malthios inside Theo as grounds for collective condemnation, collapsing the distinction between a former Demon King, a host, and the healer Theo has become.
That judgment is challenged by Leafel. A mirror opens to show Micah casting from the village square, with Imani, Dale, Dmitri and his parents, Nib, Amaya, and the people of Leafel gathered behind him. Hayden speaks for the village and demands Theo’s release. Their intervention reveals the rule’s deepest social consequence: outside the capital, Theo is not understood only as the vessel of a feared title. He is also the healer who built a home in Leafel and became part of a community willing to defend him publicly.
